Is it safe to take travel vacation if you have seizure?
If you are fond of exploring different parts of the world and like to take trips often with your family, but don’t know what precautions you have to take because of your seizures, you should have some basic idea about various means of taking travel vacations.
Different means of travel
You can go to travel vacations by using any mean of transport, like, car, train, plane, boat, etc. While taking a vacation you should also be aware of the types and frequency of seizure, how safely you will be able to respond to the seizure, whether there will be any medical help available during the trip, how flexible are the travel plans, etc.
The different means of travel are as follows:
By train: You can go for this option if it is not possible for you to drive or you cannot travel by planes. If you do not have anyone accompanying you, you should be careful on the train platforms, so that you don’t fall onto the tracks during a seizure. Traveling in a train or a bus has more flexibility in getting help if needed.
By car: It is one of the cheapest means of transport. If you have seizures during your trip, then it is advisable not to drive the car. Rules and regulations about driving for people with seizures vary from one state to another. Prior to taking the trip, you should have a discussion with your physician. In case of epileptic patients, you should make sure that you have a control on your seizure and will be able to drive safely. While driving, you need to take frequent breaks and avoid driving at nights.
By airplane: If you have normal seizure, you can travel by planes safely, however, the Aerospace Medical Association recommends people with uncontrollable seizure not to travel by commercial airliners, due to the lack of proper medical help during a flight. If it is very much essential for you to travel, you should have someone accompanying you. You should consult your physician on the impact of changing time zones, sleep deprivation, etc. You should carry with you a good supply of medicines and a letter from your physician, which will have a detailed description of seizure plan, outlining what should be done in case you have seizure during the flight.
Most people with seizures travel a lot without any problem. But, you should take proper precautions and extra care, so that you can enjoy the vacation without having any stresses of traveling and make the travel vacation enjoyable for everyone.
